I ask as I have just returned from Mauritius and it is a truly beautiful island, the people are very, very welcoming and have no bitterness about us in the West having more than themselves.

The country has its problems mostly the fact that the wages paid to are abyssmal and it has no form of social security, but on the weekends I saw even the poorest of families going to the beach which was always nearby and just spending quality time together. The pace of life was slower and there was racial unity within the country despite the fact that African, Chinese, Franco-Mauritians, Hindus, Muslims and Chrisitians lived and worked side by side…. I asked the people that I met whether there was conflict within the communities and really there just wasn’t…
The people were not well off but they really seemed to be a lot happier than us in the West…
I aksed many Mauritians people if they wanted to live in England and the overwhelming response was No, even though they knew we earn more in this country and have a social security system. One woman said to me.. “No, I don’t want to move to the UK or USA, I live in paradise”
I would not say that Mauritius had any rare diseases… they had an outbreak of Chikungunya fever transmitted by mosqutoes but that arrived there on the island from India. Otherwise there is nothing wierd and wonderful there…
